Point of the tour course2: If you want to see
more deep inside of Jeju island, I strongly recommend this course. For a long
time Jeju had been very harsh island for living, so that people were vulnerable
to nature. Because of this kind of situation Jeju people have created so many
god and goddess. That's why Jeju island is known for its diverse mythologies. In
this course we will visit at a real shamanic shrine.
Jeju
island has 368 volcanic craters, so it is called a paradise of craters. We will
climb one of the most beautiful volcanic craters in Jeju island. Well, we will
go not only a crater but also a lava tube(actually we call it a tube instead of
a cave). Do you want to explore the longest lava cave in the world? Then, here
we go!
Have
you ever heard of woman diver in Jeju island? The job of diving into the water
is endangered now. Let's see the sad history of woman
divers.

Notice - this course needs a lot of walking.
If
you are ready to walk, then take this course.
1.
Jeju natural folkore museum
Jeju
island had been isolated for a long time. Actually it was an independant
maritime kingdom once called 'Tamra kingdom'. If you want to know about history
and culture of Jeju island, this is the best place for it. The statue of a woman
carrying a water jar is one of symbols of Jeju island. Why?  If you are curious
about that, then Jeju natural and folkore museum will give you an
answer.
No
matter what kind of god or goddess people have believed in to struggle harsh
environment for a long time. Jeju island is known for its diverse god and
goddess. If you want to understand Jeju people's life, you should know the
mechanism of their belief. Even though this is not a touristic
attraction, Waheul Bonhyang dang is worth place visiting for understanding of
Jeju culture.
Jeju
island is known for a paradise of volcanic craters. Darangshi volcanic crater is
a queen of craters in Jeju island. It is 382m height and the depth of crater
itself is 115m. Walking on the rim of the top gives you maginificent view of
eastern part of Jeju island. Darangshi crater also has a tragic story which is
one of the biggest massacre happened in 1940s in Jeju island.
This
crater gives you not only a great view but also historical
story.
4.
Manjanggul lava tube
Manjanggul lava tube is the longest lava tube in the world discovered so far. The total length is 7.8km but it opens to the public only 1km.
However,
it shows you vivid vestiges lava flowing happened 500,000 years ago within 1km.
At the end of the tube there is a lava column(7.8m) which is the biggest one in
the world. Mangjaggul lava tube has been registered as Natural Heritage of the
World by UNESCO in 2007.
6.
Haenye Museum
Haenye(Jeju
woman diver) can be seen only in Jeju island. This Jeju woman's primitive job
has been come down generations to generations but now it is endangered as the
society being mordenized. Jeju Haenye Museum is located in Jongdali coast line
because the sea on this coast line is well known for Jeju women's diving
working. Why don't you see real Haenye and learn about them?
